Paediatric Dentistry

Gentle dental care for children—checkups, preventive care, and treatment in a friendly, reassuring environment. We help your child feel at ease.

Paediatric dentistry is dental care tailored to children, from their first teeth through the teenage years. Good oral habits and regular checkups from an early age help prevent cavities, support healthy development, and make the dentist a positive part of your child’s routine. We offer checkups, cleanings, fluoride treatments, fillings when needed, and advice on brushing, diet, and habits like thumb-sucking. Our aim is to keep your child’s teeth and gums healthy while making visits calm and reassuring.

At Brown Street Dental, Dr. Sunny Golwala and our team welcome children and work at their pace. We use simple words, show them what we do when appropriate, and take time so they feel safe. Parents can usually stay in the room during the appointment. For children who are very anxious or need more involved treatment, we can discuss behaviour guidance and sedation options. We want every child to leave feeling that the dentist is a friendly place.

What to Expect

  1. First Visit & Getting Comfortable

    We will:

    • Meet you and your child and explain what we do in simple terms
    • Let your child see the chair and tools in a non-scary way (e.g. “count your teeth”)
    • Often do a short examination and cleaning; for very young or nervous children we may keep the first visit very brief and build up over time
    • Answer your questions about home care, diet, and when to bring them back
  2. Checkup & Cleaning

    At regular visits we will:

    • Check teeth and gums for decay, crowding, or other issues
    • Clean the teeth and may apply fluoride to strengthen enamel
    • Take X-rays when needed (e.g. to check for cavities between teeth)
    • Discuss any concerns and recommend follow-up or treatment if necessary
  3. Preventive Care

    We support prevention through:

    • Fluoride treatments and fissure sealants (where appropriate) to reduce the risk of cavities
    • Advice on brushing and flossing, diet (limiting sugary drinks and snacks), and habits
    • Regular recall so your child gets used to coming every six months (or as we recommend)
  4. Treatment When Needed

If your child has a cavity or other problem we will:

    • Explain the treatment in child-friendly language and get your consent
    • Use local anaesthetic when needed so your child is comfortable
    • Offer fillings, extractions, or other care as appropriate; for very anxious children we can discuss sedation
    • Give you clear aftercare and follow-up advice

Frequently Asked Questions

  • When should my child first see the dentist?
We recommend bringing your child for a first visit when their first tooth appears or by their first birthday. Early visits are usually short and help your child get used to the practice. We can also advise on teething, brushing, and diet from the start.
  • Can I stay with my child during the appointment?
Yes. Parents are usually welcome to stay in the room during the checkup or treatment. This often helps children feel secure. We will let you know if we need your child to sit alone for a particular step (e.g. X-rays), and we always keep you informed.
  • What if my child is very nervous or won’t cooperate?
We work at your child’s pace and use simple, positive language. We may break treatment into shorter visits or try “tell-show-do” so they know what to expect. For very anxious children or more involved treatment, we can discuss behaviour guidance and sedation options. Our goal is a positive experience, not to force anything.
  • How often should my child have a checkup?
Most children benefit from a checkup every six months. Some may need to come more often if they are at higher risk of decay or we are monitoring growth. We will recommend a recall interval that suits your child.
  • Do you do fillings and other treatment for children?
Yes. We provide fillings, extractions, and other care when needed. We use local anaesthetic so your child is comfortable and explain each step in an age-appropriate way. For multiple or complex treatments we may suggest sedation or referral to a paediatric specialist.
  • What are fissure sealants and does my child need them?
Fissure sealants are a thin coating applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth to help prevent cavities in the grooves. They are often used on permanent molars when they first come through. We will advise whether they are recommended for your child based on their risk of decay.
